2026 Korea FX Effective Rate Guide

Exchanging the same 1,000,000 KRW into USD, JPY, or EUR can differ by 10,000–50,000 KRW depending on where you exchange. This guide breaks down bank spread, preferential rates, brand fees, and travel-card exemptions in plain numbers.

This guide is based on the 2026-04-19 mid-market rate snapshot and publicly posted fees from banks, exchange desks, and travel cards. Actual amounts depend on live rates, vouchers, and policy changes. Unofficial tool.

1. Mid-Market Rate · Spread · Preferential Rate — 3 Core Concepts

  • Mid-market rate — The weighted average from the Seoul FX market, published once a day. This is the "cost price" at which banks buy and sell foreign currency. Customer rates deviate from this by the spread.
  • Spread — The margin added on top of the mid-market rate. Typically 1.75% for USD cash, 1.9–2% for EUR/GBP, and 4–6% for exotic currencies (THB, VND).
  • Preferential rate — The percentage of spread discounted. 90% preferential means only 10% of the spread remains. Common with premium banking tiers, VIP coupons, or airport branch promotions.

3. Best Route by Currency

  • USD (travel + emergency): Hana TravelLog or Woori WON+ with 0% exchange fee is overwhelmingly the best. Exchanging 1,000,000 KRW saves ~5,000 KRW vs Myeongdong and ~40,000 KRW vs Incheon Airport.
  • JPY (Japan trip): Myeongdong exchange desks have a real spread of 0.6–1%, the lowest tier. TravelLog is nearly identical. Incheon Airport costs ~40,000 KRW extra per 1,000,000 KRW.
  • EUR / GBP (extended Europe stay): TravelWallet-type cards at 0%. Even at 90% preferential rate from a bank, ~0.2% spread remains.
  • THB / VND (Southeast Asia): Exotic currencies have 4–6% spread in Korea. Better to withdraw from a local ATM with TravelLog — effectively under 1% fee, with US$500/day ATM withdrawal free.
  • Credit card overseas payment: No exchange process needed; points/miles/cashback can push the effective fee to 0%. Always decline DCC (paying in KRW at a foreign terminal) — it adds 5–8%.

4. 90% Preferential ≠ 90% Off the Fee

A common misconception: 90% preferential means 90% off the spread, not that only 0.1% fee remains. For USD spread of 1.75% with 90% preferential, effective fee = 1.75% × 10% = 0.175% — still higher than TravelWallet (0%). For immediate cash at a bank branch, it is still excellent value.

5. TravelWallet vs Bank Preferential — When Each Wins

  • Short trip under 1,000,000 KRW — TravelWallet. 0% exchange fee + free ATM abroad wins every scenario.
  • Large exchange over 5,000,000 KRW + cash needed — Bank main branch with 90%+ preferential. Large volumes can qualify for additional coupons.
  • Emergency exchange (need cash today) — Myeongdong. Cash available within business hours. Travel cards take 2–5 days for delivery.
